In 2006 with the help of the Open Space Institute, the State was able to purchase 16 acres of land in the Town of Saratoga. This property is where British General John Burgoyne surrendered to American General Horatio Gates on October 17, 1777 – a pivotal event in American history that is famously captured by John Trumbull’s painting of this scene which hangs in the United States Capitol Rotunda.
