The exceptional scenery, history, culture, and natural resources along New York’s Canal system earned the 524-mile network of waterways and communities along its shores Congressional designation as a National Heritage Corridor in 2000. The designation recognizes the significance of New York’s canals to the state and nation. Today, the Erie Canalway Commission, in partnership with the National Park Service, collaborates with government agencies, communities and organizations to protect and promote the canal corridor for all to use and enjoy.
